A Family Practice
This means that she can see not only your children, but your entire family, a convenience that many families appreciate.
What Is a Pediatric Dentist?
A pediatric dentist is a specialist that has had two additional years of training in pediatric dentistry after graduating from dental school. While Dr. Tran is not a pediatric dentist, she has extensive training in dental treatment for children. In her regular dental school curriculum, she was trained to provide all of the basic dental care that children require. And beyond that, she was selected for a special honors program in pediatric dentistry at New York University, which consisted of a one-year residency. You and your child should both feel comfortable in Dr. Tran's care. And, in the unlikely event that your child would have a complex condition beyond her comfort level, she wouldn't hesitate to refer your child to a pediatric dentist specialist.
Your Child's First Dental Visit
One of Dr. Tran's goals is to ensure that your child develops a healthy attitude toward dental care. Many adults who avoid dental care because of fear can trace that fear to an unpleasant experience at the dentist as a child. For this reason, we urge you to make that first visit before there are any treatment needs. We would like to see your child soon after the first baby tooth erupts, which is somewhere between age six months and one year.
Preparing Your Child for That First Pediatric Dental Visit
- Don't wait until he or she has a problem and is experiencing pain. A visit under those circumstances can't help but be disagreeable for your child, and could create an unpleasant first impression of the dentist that will be difficult to overcome. Make an appointment for a routine exam, and let that be your child's introduction to dental care.
- Don't overprepare your child for the visit. When you overprepare your child, you are telegraphing to that child that you yourself are worried about how it will go. We find that most children can pick up on those signals and your preparation will then backfire. Treat the visit as routine, no big deal, and a little fun, and leave it at that.
