I need some help. My husband snores so loudly these days I can’t sleep at all. I’ve even tried moving to another room, though I hated the idea of the two of us sleeping separately. I can hear him from down the hall. I spoke to my doctor and he suggested we see a dentist. I’m not sure what this has to do with teeth, but am hoping you can tell me if there’s a specialist in the dental field I need to see before I waste money on an additional office visit.
I can understand your skepticism about seeing a dentist for something that seems to have nothing to do with teeth. The reason a dentist is the one consulted has to do with the solution. Let’s start first with what is causing your husband’s snoring.
There are muscles in the back of your throat. When those muscles relax too much, they can partially obstruct the air passage. This leads to that rattling, snoring sound. Sometimes, the muscles can completely obstruct the air passage, which leads to stopped breathing. This happens to patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
Thankfully, there’s a solution.
Your Dentist Can Stop Snoring
If you see a dentist who treats moderate or obstructive sleep apnea, they’ll be able to help. It’s not a specialty. Just call the office and ask if they treat snoring or sleep apnea. If they say yes, you’ll be able to get the help you need.
In most cases, a simple oral device is all that is needed. This is where the dental part comes in. The dentist will fit the oral device to your husband’s bite assuring maximum comfort. This adjusts his jaw just enough to keep those muscles from collapsing into his air passage.
You should notice an instant change. No more snoring = peaceful nights for you!
