My dentist is a great bread and butter kind of dentist. He does exams and fills teeth when necessary. He can also do extractions and crowns. But, what I want is a dentist who kind of “does it all”. Is that even possible or is everything specialized? I want to know if I lose a tooth I can get a dental implant and if I decide I want my teeth whitened I can do that too without having to office hop.
There aren’t very many dental specialties. That gives general dentists a lot of breath in the services they want to focus on. You can certainly find a dentist who does all the services you require. The best dentists are always increasing their professional knowledge and skills. Though, you will be better served if you make a list of all the services you’re interested in and then do a search for dentists who invested time and training in those areas.
The services you listed shouldn’t be too hard to find. While some cosmetic procedures, such as porcelain veneers, require post-doctoral training to do well, teeth whitening is something any dentist could do, so you’ll find a great number of dentists who offer that.
Dental implants will be a little more narrow. It is an advanced procedure that requires some post-doctoral training as well. Though, as it is becoming the gold standard in tooth replacement options, you will find more and more dentists investing in that training. When you do look for a dentist who also offers that, make certain you check their success rate. You’ll want someone who has a rate of 98% or above.
One thing to look at is the variety of services they offer. That shows they have a well-rounded scope of continuing education. That brings me to a second point. How much continuing education do they do? Each state has its own minimum standards. You could see how much your state requires and then ask the office how much their dentist typically does. If it is always the minimum, that might be a red flag.
Finally, check their reviews. Do they provide good service? Is their office staff friendly? Does their work hold up? Does the dentist have a good chairside manner?
This should help you find that comprehensive dentist you’re looking for.
