I read that an ultrasonic tip can be used to remove the post in a tooth. I’ve recently had a tooth which required a post and crown. I usually use a sonic toothbrush. Will this loosen the post in my tooth?
The type of ultrasonic tip used for something like that would be the tip of an ultrasonic scaler. Dental hygienists use these to help them clean your teeth. To use it to remove a post, it has to be pressed directly on to the post for a period of time. This won’t happen with your sonic toothbrush. The vibrations aren’t strong enough and, even if they were, you wouldn’t be brushing the post. You are good to go.
It’s great that you ask these questions though. Never be afraid to get as much information as possible out of your dentist. They should always be willing to answer questions, as well as stop anytime you need during a procedure to make sure you understand what is going on.
A well made dental crown should last quite a few years if the patient is good with their dental hygiene.
Be aware, if you ever decide to have any cosmetic work done, such as teeth whitening, only your natural tooth structure will whiten. The crown will remain the same color it was when you had it made. This sometimes takes patients by surprise. In those cases, they have to have the porcelain crown re-made to match the new color.
This is often why a dentist will suggest a patient get their teeth whitened before their crown is made to ensure it’s a permanent color for them and they won’t have to re-do it after whitening.
This may not even be an issue for you if the crown is not in a visible part of your smile or if you don’t plan on having teeth whitening done anyway.
