I had a horrible dentle appointment. I’d moved to a new city. My previous dentist was really gentle. This one was pretty rough. Even the hygienist was a little sadistic. I had a gap between my teeth that had never been there before. Could she have done that with her scaler?

It’s highly unlikely, like close to impossible, for a scaler to chip your tooth. It is more likely that you previous dentist missed a lot of plaque and tartar. The thorough cleaning revealed a gap you may not have realized was there because of the build up.
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have pleasant appointments that are thorough. There are plenty of gentle dentists who get all the build up.
My suggestion is you try this dentist one more time. If it is still unpleasant after this thorough cleaning, then you need to look for someone more gentle. However, make sure you don’t start showing build up where that small gap is again.
