I used to go to the dentist all the time, but that was mostly because my parents made me. I hated it because it always hurt like crazy. I’ve been on my own for the last four years, as an “adult”, but I haven’tgone to the dentist. No one was making me and I couldn’t see the point of putting myself through the pain.
However, lately, I’ve been worried that I might be ruining my teeth. I want to go to the dentist, but I’m scared to death. Why does it have to hurt so much?

If you went to the dentist regularly throughout your life, and it sounds like you did, then there sould be no reason for it to hurt as badly as you described. It’s possible the problem was your childhood dentist.
There are dentists who are more gentle than others. What you need is one that is gentle enough for you.
I’d do an internet search for gentle dentist and see what pops up from your area. Then, give them a try. Make sure you tell them about your previous experience so they’ll be sensitive to your anxiety.
