I have a four year old that has recently started grinding his teeth. Aside from being an extraordinarily irritating habit, should I be concerned?

Believe it or not, this is a fairly common problem among young children to grind their teeth. We’re not sure why. Some things that have been suggested are stress (there’s a lot of new things going on in their lives about that time) and earaches. However, the truth is, we really don’t know why they do it.
There is good news though. Most children just outgrow it, generally be the age of six–Some sooner. It is not likely to be damaging his teeth. The only exception I would make to that is if he is complaining about face or jaw pain. In those cases, I would take him to his pediatric dentist and let them have a look at him.
