I had a horrible dental appointment. It hurt like mad and it was just a cleaning. When I complained that it hurt, he said if I had been better with my oral hygiene it wouldn’t hurt at all. I have always had decent appointments before this. My hygiene hasn’t changed, why has the pain level?

I’m sorry for your bad experience, and I have to say that I disagree with your dentist extensively. I don’t care how bad your hygiene was (and I’m not saying yours was), your dentist can be gentle. It just takes a little compassion for your patient to give them as comfortable appointment as possible.
One thing I would check, is whether you’re flossing. There are lots of people who diligently brush their teeth, but for some reason neglect flossing. Adding that to your oral hygiene routine will make a huge difference on the tenderness of your gums during appointments.
