I have recently started throwing up after I eat. I don’t really think of myself as bulimic, but I know that’s what most people call it. How long can I throw up after I eat before my teeth get damaged?
It is good that you realize that vomiting damages your teeth. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take very long for the acid to eat away at your enamel. It’s the enamel taht protects your teeth. Without it, your teeth are subject to erosion. It won’t take long for your teeth to become worn, then, and even appear translucent. You will also notice some tooth sensitivity. Generally, the damage starts in the back, so you may not even realize it happening at first.
It is important you get dental treatment as soon as possible to try to minimize the damage. In the meantime, there are things you can do yourself. As soon as you are done vomiting, rinse out your mouth with water immediately. Then wait a few minutes and brush your teeth.
Talk to your dentist about what is going on. They’ll keep it confidential and can give you some fluoride treatments to help strengthen your teeth. It’s important they know what is going on, because you’ll need the dentist to be as gentle as possible in your cleaning. In their weakened state, your teeth are very subject to chip and break.
